Showing your TV commercial one time, running an ad in the newspaper once, or doing one mailing of postcards may not be enough to grab and keep the audience’s attention.

Get your name out there, do it on a regular basis and people will remember you when they need someone in your line of business. Actually, this particular “Hot Dope” cannot be stressed enough – and failure to adhere to it is the #1 reason new businesses fail.

(1) They have not taken the time to develop a marketing plan.

A plan focuses your efforts and allows you to make the most of your marketing budget. Unfortunately, you can market without a plan. Yes, you read that right. You can do it, and people do market without marketing plans everyday.

But that does not mean you should. To make the most of your marketing efforts and budget, make sure you take the time each year to create a plan.

(2) They don’t have written goals



Smart business owners have written goals and objectives for what they want to achieve with their business and for each of their marketing activities. I know this sounds b-o-r-i-n-g, but it's a fact.

There is proof that people who put their goals into writing have a higher success rate than those who do not. Plus, how can you develop a plan if you don't have concrete objectives? You need a clear vision and target to aim for. You can't possibly determine what marketing or how much marketing you need if you don't know what you are aiming for.

(3) They have a short-term attitude.

They are reactive in nature, and while on the surface it appears they are doing a lot of marketing, they are not doing anything consistently or long enough to make an impact. (1) Develop a marketing plan. Make sure you make it your number one priority to develop a marketing plan every year.

(2) Write objectives. Write at least one objective that states what results you would like to achieve with your business over the next year. And, write at least one objective for every marketing activity you undertake, that states what results you would like to achieve from that activity over the next year.

(3) Stay the course. Check in on your progress toward your objectives every three to six months, but give your plan a good nine to 12 months to work.

(4) Determine your unique selling proposition and make sure it is represented clearly and in a compelling way in everything you do.

(5) Don't try to be "everything to everyone." Focus on a few specific benefits and a specific audience.

(6) Track all of your marketing activities so you know exactly what is working and what is not working.

(7) Don't rely on one marketing activity. Employ a mix of several marketing activities to reach more people more times.

(8) Create a system to help you stay on track with your marketing activities every month and to help you plan ahead for future activities.

(9) Create a realistic budget based on a percentage of your projected revenue, or the dollars you have available for marketing and stick to it. Marketing is an investment in your business. You have to spend enough to make progress but not more than your business can financially support.

(10) Understand your environment. The economy, competition, the strength of your particular industry, your prospects' situation. You have to understand them all so you can create an effective plan to either overcome obstacles or take advantage of opportunities.

You muted the commercials on the TV last night because you
were fed up with interruption marketing. Ditto if you went through your mail to find most of it is junk. Ditto again, if a stranger phoned you (usually at dinner time) asking you to answer a survey, or give to yet another worthy cause.

Interruption marketing does just that. It interrupts you,
and steals your time.

And it is the darling of mass marketing, which is the child of the mass media, which was born in the 19th century with large circulation newspapers, and thrived in the 20th with radio, TV, and the international media.

Now, it's overkill. People ignore it (can you remember any of the TV ads you saw last night), or hate it, like that dinnertime phone call.

Before mass marketing, product information was rarely thrust at you. You chose it. You initiated the whole process. It was your idea that you wanted a particular thing. So you'd stroll down the street seeking the store that sold it. Then you'd go into the store to ask a clerk about the quality, price, size, colour, etc. of its assortment of the thing you had in mind. If none suited you, off to another store.

You had control of the whole process. Now, because we're all becoming immune to interruption marketing, this old-style of marketing is back in favour.

But today it's called 'permission marketing', and you call
all the shots. You permit a firm or individual to provide
you with information about a service or product they offer. And it's done primarily through the Internet and e-mail.

Why am I telling you all this? Because you're probably using both types. Your website exemplifies permission marketing, while your cold-canvassing interrupts.

Interestingly, the most favored practice-building techniques of top-earning advisors involve permission marketing. So it behooves you to increase your use of permission marketing, and reduce your use of interruption marketing.

Think about it. People hate interruption marketing, but like permission marketing. Why? Because they're in control.

something ongoing that will help build the recipient's trust and confidence in you. Your newsletter, for example, thus:
"Your name was given to me by Mr. Paul Piper who felt you'd benefit, as he did, from utilizing my services.

"To introduce you to my areas of expertise I've included the current issue of my client newsletter, and will mail more monthly issues before contacting you directly.

"If you would prefer to meet me before that, please call, or write me."

Making Money Online - It's Easy Really


When I built my first website four years ago I really didn't have a clue what I was doing. I was just learning HTML, just started to understand about FTP for uploading files to my host and putting a form together seemed awfully complicated. But it's amazing how quick you start picking these things up. What seemed like such a challenge soon became second nature. In fact, it was all rather easy. Except for one thing....

Four years is a long time but in that time I've put together some very powerful and profitable websites. I actually taught myself ASP.NET programming and have built all my own dynamic websites. I know what it entails, I know how much work goes into it but the one aspect that was truly most challenging was search engine optimisation and marketing, or SEO and SEM for short.

What makes SEO so challenging is that the search engines, apart from all having different criteria in ranking websites, keep moving the goal posts. What worked well a few months ago for good ranking may not necessarily be true today. This means that you cannot just sit back and rest on your laurels. SEO (and SEM) is all about constant tweaking of websites and building a strong inbound link campaign.

This is very tough! Getting links to your site, which is what you need to rank well particularly in Google, is not easy these days. Google are clamping down on people who purchase links, press release links don't seem to count for much, article links aren't worth all that much either...and I could go on. The goal posts have been moved and carrying out a thorough SEO/ SEM campaign is hugely time consuming and results can take months to show up.

So when I start a new website today what do I do differently?

Apart from kicking off my SEO/ SEM campaign I also spend a bit of money on pay-per-click advertising. These are the "sponsored link" ads that appear in search engine results and as "Ads by Google" on third-party websites.

Pay-per-click (PPC) enables you to generate instant traffic to your website without waiting for the search engines to index and rank your website. In fact, after setting up your PPC campaign you can start generating traffic to it pretty much instantly. Some cynics would say that the search engines have made SEO harder for us so that we spend some money on their PPC campaigns. Not me, any proper business would do well to focus efforts on both as both have their individual merits.

One of the main benefits of a PPC campaign is that Google, for example, provides you with some truly excellent tools to monitor and fine tune your traffic and expenditure. It's a fantastic system for generating traffic, for example, to affiliate products. If you're not sure what this means, as an affiliate you basically promote someone else's product and you get a commission if you make a sale. It's actually one of the oldest and still one of the best systems for generating an income online.

In fact, if you're just starting out, or have been marketing online for some time, I guarantee you that there is no better way of making a great income than by setting up a PPC campaign to sell other people's products.

Think about it.....millions are made every day by people using this very system.

run extremely profitable email campaigns on. The chances of your everyday joe finding this type of affiliate on the internet are slim to none. But if you

You know your competitor is making cash day and night being there but how did they do it? If you're like me you analyze your competition the manual
way. You will Google a search term and enter the number one ranked website. Then you will pull up the source code of the page (Which is on the
toolbar underneath "View"). There you can see what keywords your competitor has entered in their meta tags. This will give you a good idea of what
you need to do to get ranked well. Be sure to also look at their content and skim through it because obviously Google thinks they're relevant to the
search term. Take a couple of mental notes for their on-page SEO efforts. Then you can go back and create your website with those factors and mind
and out-optimize them for the same or similar terms. That's the manual way. The other way I suggest doing it for those who are not as savvy on what
factors to bear in mind, would be to use software that you can submit any website's url and see their keyword lists and where they are ranked in
Google for those particular search terms. That will save you a load of time and better help your efforts in getting ranked number one in Google.

When it comes to an affiliate program, one of the most common mistakes made is choosing to sell a product that you don't believe in. Although you may make a little money temporarily, you may also be creating a bad name for yourself, so you won't make money for long. That's why it's important to promote products you believe in.

When it comes to promoting a product you believe in, one of the most commonly asked questions is “how?” Well obviously the best way to promote an affiliate product you believe in, is to actually try out the product.

You have to be so quick to react, that the sale could be over before you even decide what to do about it.

Find quality products, in lower and higher priced ranges. There are many good products that can sell for many months, even years. Find those, and let them be the bulk of your affiliate choices. You will make more money in the long run, and your reputation will carry you higher and higher.

The pay-per-click method is the method most preferred by affiliates, for their site’s visitor would only have to visit the advertiser’s site for them to gain money. The other two methods, on the other hand, are better preferred by merchants, as they would only have to compensate you if your visitor becomes one of their registrants or if the visitor would actually buy their products.

Getting much profit on affiliate marketing programs, however, does not depend so much on the compensation method is it does on the traffic generated by your site. A website that can attract more visitors would generally have the greater chance of profiting in affiliate marketing programs.

What about Google Adsense?

Google Adsense is actually some sort of an affiliate marketing program. In Google Adsense, Google act as the intermediary between the affiliates and the merchants. The merchant, or the advertiser, would simply sign up with Google and provide the latter with text ads pertaining to their products. These ads, which is actually a link to the advertiser’s website, would then appear on Google searches as well as on the websites owned by the affiliates, or by those webmasters who have signed up with the Google Adsense program.

While one can find a lot of similarities between Google Adsense and other affiliate marketing programs, you can also see a lot of differences. In Google Adsense, all the webmaster has to do is place a code on his website and Google takes care of the rest. The ads that Google would place on your site would generally be relevant to the content of your site. This would be advantageous both for you and for the advertiser, as the visitors of your site would more or less be actually interested with the products being advertised.

The Google Adsense program compensates the affiliate in a pay-per-click basis. The advertisers would pay Google a certain amount each time their ad on your site is clicked and Google would then forward this amount to you through checks, although only after Google have deducted their share of the amount. Google Adsense checks are usually delivered monthly. Also, the Google Adsense program provides webmasters with a tracking tool that allows you to monitor the earnings you actually get from a certain ad.

So, where do all of these lead us to?

Where else but to profits, profits and even more profits! Affiliate marketing programs and the Google Adsense program simply work, whether you are the merchant or the affiliate. For the merchant’s side, a lot of money can be saved if advertising effort is concentrated on affiliate marketing rather than on dealing with advertising firms. For the webmaster, you can easily gain a lot of profits just by doing what you do best, and that is by creating websites. Clickbank is one of the largest and most popular Affiliate Networks around. It has thousands of digital products and thousands of affiliates promoting those products in exchange for a large commission on every item they sell. Commissions vary from 10 per product!

Unfortunately, most affiliates end up loosing money with Clickbank or give up all together before they make any money. They loose money because they end up as buyers, buying more and more Clickbank products as they try to learn more on how to promote those products instead of actually selling them.

Mini-sites of yesterday will not work today. The simple one page sale site will not work as effectively any more as it did in the past. The fact that there are so many of these site out there has made competition really fierce. What visitors to web sites want now is content, valuable content!

In recent years another option, Adsense, became an alternative means for online marketers to make a little income, and I do mean little. It used to a 'great little earner'. However, today, Adsense sites return less and less money as competition grows and those who want to do the 'right thing' are left behind by those who don't really care how they 'succeed.'

More and more automatically generated Adsense sites are popping up and more and more fancy algorithms are used to generate those sites. A quick search on Google will return numerous software up for sale to create these sites by the push of a button. How many do you want, one or one thousand? The content of theses generated sites are next to impossible to actual read as they have no meaningful content most of the time. They are geared towards search engines and to create 'place-holders' for Adsense ads.

The number of these sites, and software to generate them, is a good indication of how desperate people are in trying to make a 'living' with Adsense. My guess is that there are very few, if any, people making significant income with Adsense unless you have such a high volume of traffic to your site that the 1 or 2 cents do actually add up to dollars, eventually.

And this is where my old favorite, Clickbank, comes in. With a little twist and lateral thinking you can actually combine the earning power of Clickbank with the ease of use and flexibility of Adsense. Imagine what would happen if you combined Adsense ads with Clickbank products. You could make dollars from your Clickbank 'advertising' instead of getting only one or two cents from Adsense ads.

So how would you go about implementing a system like this? Obviously, the simplest way would be to scour Clicbank's Market place and pick out products which fit in with your sites theme/niche and manually format them to look like Adsense ads. You also want to make sure that you have your Clickbank affiliate id linked to that block of text of course, so that people will buy the product through your Clickbank id and the commission can go straight to your Clickbank account.

The other option is of course some form of automation that allows you to insert Clickbank product listing in your pages at strategic locations. It would ideally have some form of niche/keyword matching so that the Clickbank products inserted to your pages will match the content of those pages.

If you did something like this, your income would increase faster then using Adsense. People are so used to seeing Adsense ads by now that they are trained to ignore them. And, of course, should they loose concentration, there are still the reminders that are sure to put them straight, 'Ads by Google'

Many web site owners are getting their Google Adsense account terminated when they have done nothing wrong to deserve the punishment. Considering the money that they are getting from Adsense, they would certainly want to get back into it.

Click fraud is the act of clicking on ads for the purpose of costing the advertiser money. It is simply the same as paying out cash for false leads. Many people website owners are aware of this fraud and are sharing the same sentiment that this is the one big problem that Adsense is facing.

How do you prevent being involved in this fraud?

Majority of web hosts are offering access logs. Once this is offered to you, it is necessary that you hand it over to Google as well. This allows them to look for any suspicious activity on your site. Problems like this are very serious and giving it to them is saying that you would want to help them in any way you can in solving the problem.

It can also help if you have a click monitoring software. If you do not have one yet, you should try and get one. There is absolutely no major factor preventing you from having one because most of this software is free.

As usual, all the information you have received should be turned over to Google. This is showing Google that you too are fighting against click frauds and you are no way a part of it.

Study your server logs and watch for any activity that seems suspicious. Report anything that you may find odd, may it big or small thing.

You may want to consider disabling ads for your own IP address and local geographic area. This will certainly prevent accidents and will not make Google mistake another user as you. You can do through a htaccess file. This will avoid Google mistaking as clicking on your own ads and be kicked out because of it.

Keep your Adsense off on pop ups and pop unders. Your ads should not be displayed on content sites that promote illegal activity or tampering of the legal rights of other people or business. Included in this are the content that is considered adult and gambling ones. If you think that you may be breaking this rule, immediately remove your content or Adsense from the web page.

Be truthful and confess up to Google about times when you might have clicked on your own ads, whether accidentally or intentionally. Or the times when you have done something that is against the Terms of Service that they are implementing. Be honest about anything that you may have done that is wrong. Confessing is way better than Google learning about it eventually. It would mean eventual termination and no getting back what you have worked so hard for.

Do not tell your family or friends about Adsense on your website. Chances are they may start clicking on them to help you make money without you knowing it. They may be doing more harm to you than help by trying it in the first place.

If ever someone you know chanced upon your Adsense, make sure they understand that they cannot click on your ads under any circumstances. It would be wise to brief them on important things about Adsense and what not to do with them.

Most pay per click networks have different measures in hand to protect website owners against click frauds. Other search engines can track more than 50 data points, IP address, browser’s information, user’s session info and pattern recognition. They also have “systems” available that detects fraud. Not to mention the specialized teams monitoring how things are going and helping advertisers stop click frauds.

Google offers suggestions on how to avoid click fraud. Using “negative keywords” can be used to keep your Adsense showing on products and services that are in no way related to yours. Adding tracking URLs to your links so you can track the traffic coming from Google.

Do not be caught in the Google click fraud. Be aware and be wary.
